What are the program dates?
The online course is active from 5/16/22 to 6/25/22. All pre-travel coursework must be completed prior to traveling to South Africa. The course travel dates for 2022 are June 25 to July 15. In South Africa, we spend 3 days in Johannesburg learning about South African politics, history, society and performance before flying to Port Elizabeth and then on to Makhanda for the 10 day National Arts Festival. We will see 15+ shows, meet with artists, and experience the incredible range this world-class festival has to offer in the performing arts, including theatre, dance, music, film and visual art. The arts are a lens through which we explore South African culture, politics, history and racial dynamics. (See Itinerary Page for more details).
Where will we stay and how will we get around?
We will all fly together to South Africa, leaving from Denver to Europe, with a layover, and then on to Johannesburg. There is a welcome dinner upon your arrival in Johannesburg. We will stay in a 3 star hotel in Johannesburg, each sharing a room with a classmate. We will travel on tour coaches with certified guides for all our excursions. Then we will fly domestically from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth and then travel via coach to Makhanda. In Makhanda, we will each have our own room in the Rhodes University dorms (which include an enormous breakfast each morning). Makhanda is a walking town and venues are generally walkable. There are also festival hopper buses actively working the town during the festival. The course includes a mid-week safari excursion to Kwantu Game Reserve. Dr. Lewis hosts welcome and farewell dinners as part of the Makhanda portion of the course.
Do I need a visa or shots?
US and Canadian citizens do not need visas to travel to South Africa. You do not need shots, we will not be traveling in malaria areas, and it is not malaria season as it is Winter in South Africa in July. During the pre-travel orientation session, Prof Lewis will address safety protocols while traveling (as well as what to pack, medicines to/not bring etc).
PLEASE CAREFULLY CHECK COVID REGULATIONS THROUGH THE US DEPT OF STATE AND THE SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY.
